11 strategies to help you nail that interview

Interviews can be scary - but with a few new strategies you'll ace them.

Take a deep breath, settle down, concentrate on the questions and answers, remember these 11 interview strategies, and you’ll nail it.

  1. Take a copy of your resume and written application with you to the interview – and perhaps add some notes and key points in the margins to you don’t have to worry about remembering everything you want to say during the interview (bye bye stress!).
  2. You might also want to take a notebook or paper to an interview to jot down notes and points during your interview (for example in a double barreled question).
  3. Don’t be afraid to take your time to answer questions during your interview. It’s better to give a thoughtful and concise answer than to rush or waffle on.
  4. Think about your answers and time before speaking – try not to ramble.
  5. Avoid “yes” and “no” answers, elaborate where possible. Reduce your “ums” and “ahs” too.
  6. Listen carefully to the questions and ask them to repeat or clarify anything you don’t understand.
  7. If you are asked a question like “How would you….”, say what you would do and if you are able to provide an example of a similar situation you’ve experienced with positive outcomes that’s even better.
  8. Market and sell yourself. Clearly they need to hire someone if they’ve advertised a job and you’re at an interview, tell them why you’re the best person for the position.
  9. Act confidently and positively. Be enthusiastic about what you have to offer.
  10. If you have carefully prepared and practised, and remember most (or even some) of these strategies, you can relax – you’ve got this.
  11. If possible, visit the interview location beforehand noting things like travel time and available parking. Leave enough time for yourself to arrive early (avoid the potential of being caught in traffic) and when you arrive you’ll have time to calm yourself if you’re still feeling a little nervous. If you are doing a phone or Skype interview, test the technology beforehand and make sure you have a quiet area to do the interview in.
